I worked out roughly how many pieces I need to cover the walls of the gallery the way I want. I think it’s about 750 and I’ve got just over 800. I’m relieved but still need to make as many as I can this week to make sure I can do what I want with them. Ideally I’d like to have areas where they are very close together and then they spread out from those patches sort of the way mould spores grow. I saw some growing on a wall of a gallery when I was helping a friend set up an installation last year and it was so gross but beautiful at the same time. I knew how to form and display these pieces when I’d seen it.
I think I can only get about 10 reasonable sized pieces done in a week, unless I just make tiny, tiny ones.
I don’t know whether I should group them into colour or size near to setting up. Or whether this would be a hindrance rather than a help. It might be more natural looking if I pick as I go but when I set up a panel in my studio to test that the white tack would hold the pieces up for two weeks it took me about an hour to decide what went well together and to stick them up, and it didn’t even matter then.
The gallery space is going to be ready for the weekend, which will be great, as I can spend all of both days installing it. I’m feeling very nervous now!
