A few months ago I was asked by Wild in Art to submit some designs for a public art sculpture trail to decorate the Olympic and Paralympic Mascots for London 2012. I was given themes which I had to interpret into some sort of design onto mascot templates.
One of my designs was accepted and I was asked to also produce a splash mascot like my splashy penguin.
Once they where approved by the Greater London Authority and London Olympics 2012 Organising Committee I got the green light to start painting. They were so huge that I couldn’t have had them both at home but very kindly I was able to have them at the back of the Comma Project shop that I had a residency at. The project was top secret so I curtained off the back of the shop to work in and with a tight schedule I worked every moment a got. My original design of Gemstones had to change slightly so that the logo could be placed on her chest but I think it’s quite true to the original design still.
My mascots are on the yellow and purple trails which are across London until September 9th. After that they go off to the new homes of the auction winners.
